Jets, Enforcers share top honors
The Jets and JPO Enforcers title wins in the 2014 Saipan Little League Baseball topped the list of top stories last week.
The fourth-ranked Jets pulled off an upset over the second-ranked Braves in the Senior League finale, 5-3. The Jets made it to the semifinals last and had to beat two other higher ranked opponents to set a finals date with the Braves. The Jets first ousted the Enforcers, 5-4, to advance to the semifinals where they surprised pennant champions Red Sox, 9-1.
In the Junior League, the JPO Enforcers gave the Comets to chance for an upset with its 8-4 victory in the title game. The pennant winners leaned on pitchers Kier Agda, Virgil Secharmidal, and Ethan Babauta to get the championship trophy against the third-ranked Comets, who marched into the finals after eliminating the second-seeded Falcons.
Meanwhile, other notable events last week was the Pacific Islands Club Hafa Adai 5K Run, the 2014 CNMI Junior Tennis Championships, the Major division of the 2014 Saipan Little League Baseball, and the 2014 QQ Rent A Car Invitational Basketball League.
Nearly 900 participated in the 5K run that was highlighted by the throwing of colored powder to runners going through the course. Keith Longuski (17:19) and Mamiko Oshima-Berger (19:48) emerged as the top finishers in the men’s and women’s divisions of the race that started and ended at the northern parking lot of PIC and brought runners to as far as Chalan Kanoa across the Triple J Five Star Wholesale Store.
In the CNMI junior tennis tournament, Thea Minor won her last junior competition on island after beating Mikayla Lopez in the girls U18 singles. Minor also won her six straight championship in the same event.
In the Major division of the SLLB, the Falcons, IT&E, Tanapag Braves, Comets, and Enforcers clinched the first five playoff berths after last week games, while five teams are battling for the last three qualifying spots.
In the QQ caging, Toka snapped Blue Haus’ four-game winning streak after eking out an 83-77 victory over the defending champion, while Mobil edged Island Manpower, 80-78.
