The Public School System has given an all clear to resume the 2021 Middle School Grass Volleyball League that was postponed for over a week due to the recent surge of COVID-19 cases in the community.

According to Nick Gross, PSS athletic director, as predicted, the tournament was given the green light to resume on March 27.

“We’ve been cleared to resume our middle school grass volleyball season. Unfortunately, due to the pause in play we are behind schedule,” he said.

However, as a result of the postponement, the athletic program has elected to omit the final two days of round-robin play that was scheduled for March 15 and March 22.

Gross said the program will instead move forward with the double-elimination tournament on Friday, April 9 and Saturday, April 10.

Initially, the league was set to enter its double-elimination tournament on March 26 to 27.

“Since we were unable to play our round-robin season for seeding purposes, we will be conducting a blind draw for seeding,” he said.

On Friday, April 9, and Saturday, April 10. All teams will need to be at the CPA Airport field no later than 2:45pm and games will begin at 3pm.

Matches will carry on to Saturday for all remaining teams starting at 8am. Currently, the semifinal and championship games will be a best-of-3 format with the championship game scheduled to begin at 11:30am.

Gross said the tournament will have four courts dedicated to both the boys and girls matches for a total of eight courts.

Teams will play a single set format to 21, with a cap at 25 and both teams are only allowed one timeout per set.

In the best-of-3 matches, the tournament will use a 21, 21, 15 format. The cap will remain at 25 in the first two sets, and should the third set be warranted, there will be no cap and teams must win by 2 points.

Rota and Tinian teams are encouraged to begin processing their commutes as soon as possible to if they still wish to participate in the tournament.

The 2021 Middle School Grass Volleyball League is being held with help from the Northern Mariana Islands Volleyball Association.
