HSEM participates in 2022 Annual National Weather Service Tropical Cyclone Seminar
The Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management and other local government agencies took part virtually in last Thursday’s Annual Tropical Cyclone Seminar organized and conducted by the Guam Homeland Security/ Office of Civil Defense, in coordination with the National Weather Service-Guam Forecast Office.
The NWS discussed the influence of climate change on tropical cyclones in Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, and how it has been notoriously difficult to separate from natural changeability. But an increasingly consistent picture has shown some aspects of these extreme weather events, although the exact extent of these events is still difficult to determine expectantly in today’s observations. Many of the observed trends in tropical cyclones are at least theoretically consistent with expectations from a warming climate.
The objective of the seminar was to familiarize decision makers with the natural hazards that threaten the region, the behavior of those hazards, the emergency information and instructions issued by the NWS and its associates, and how to make critical decisions based on the emergency information provided.
The goal is to help steer the focus on events three to five days out to plan and prepare accordingly based on the severity of the tropical cyclones and to disseminate to the public warnings and safety precautions to help maintain protection for Guam and CNMI residents. (PR)
