Six running for mayor
For the first time in Rota history, six individuals are running for mayor in the Nov. 8 general elections.
“This is historic for the first senatorial district to have six mayoral candidates,” according to Sen. Teresita A. Santos (Ind-Rota) yesterday.
Santos, who is one of those running for Rota mayor, said a six-way race would give the electorate more options or choices to elect among those seeking the mayoral position.
Saipan Tribune learned that aside from Santos, five others are running for mayor—Aubrey Hocog, Magdalena Mesngon, Harry Masga, Rodney Taisacan, and Alfred Taimanao.
Hocog is the Commonwealth Economic Development Authority board chair woman. She is currently working for the Rota Mayor’s Office where she coordinates activities and/or programs.
Mesngon is currently a Head Start teacher. She previously served as director for Rota’s Community and Cultural Affairs.
Masga is employed by the Rota office of U.S. Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (Ind-MP).
Taisacan is a former Commonwealth Ports Authority seaport director.
Taimanao is a U.S. Army veteran.
Santos is running as an independent, while Hocog is running under the Republican Party. It’s not clear yet who is the Democratic Party’s bet for Rota mayor.
In the 2018 elections, Rota Mayor Efrain M. Atalig was re-elected in a five-way mayoral race. It was learned that Atalig intends to run as a senator this November.
