Ruben Avendano topped the first round of the season-ending 2022 Fil-Taga Ace of Aces Tournament held last Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Laolao Bay Golf & Resort.

The 63-year-old Pacific Home Appliances staff shot a net score of 69 in the opening round. The 19-handicapper carded a gross score of 88 after going 43 in the first nine holes and 45 in the last nine.

Avendano said it was a rainy day at the golf course last Saturday.

“The weather was very windy and it drizzled 50% of the time, but hole No. 11 was the worst as we had to stop due to the heavy rain.”

He added that aside from that the course conditions were OK and it also helped that Lady Lucky played a part in him leading the opening round.

“Maybe I was just lucky as all my joints were working.  There are times when my knee or back just don’t want to cooperate anymore,” he said half-jokingly.

Tied at second are Das Krishnan and Will Maui after both golfers finished with identical net scores of 77. Both 11-handicappers also mirrored each other in gross score with 88s with the former going 43-45 with the latter recording a 41-47 in the front and back nines, respectively.

Fourth to fifth was also a tie between Henry Bautista and Ed Varias. The two fired twin 78s after compiling gross scores of 94 and 96, respectively.

The rest of the field, with their net scores in parenthesis, are as follows: Mike Cruz (net 79); Dan Ganacias (net 79); Freddie Cataluna (net 81), Ronnie Santos (net 81), Romy Cayetano (net 88), and Jess Yumul (net 99).

Monthly winners Hak Chon Bae, Lito Mendoza, and William Retardo were off-island and weren’t able to take part in the first round of the 2022 Fil-Taga Ace of Aces Tournament.

The second round of the season-ending tournament will be held tomorrow, Jan. 21, at the Kingfisher Golf Links in Talafofo.
