House PUTC’s ad hoc committee aims to resolve CUC issues

Rep. Vincent Seman Aldan (Ind-Saipan) disclosed Friday that the Public Utilities, Transportation and Communications Committee that he chairs is creating an ad hoc committee to try to resolve some issues facing the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.

Aldan disclosed at a House special session that one of the recommendations of some PUTC members during their meeting with CUC and the Office of the Attorney General was to create an ad hoc committee to focus and seek solutions to CUC issues.

“The way CUC is designed is not being run properly. We found that out through our extensive months of investigation,” said Aldan, who served as leader of the Transition Team for CUC.

Given that every individual in the entire CNMI is affected by CUC’s utility rates, they want everybody in the community to know that their ad hoc committee’s hearing is going to be open to the public.

“Nothing is [going to] be hidden. We want everybody to participate. And everything that we find [will be] open to everybody,” Aldan said.

He said they would like the public to understand that they are working on CUC issues in light of the economic conditions that the CNMI is in.

“We would like to make sure that that everybody is well-informed and we are open to any comments,” Aldan said.
