DPS denies rumor of officer being arrested
The Department of Public Safety has issued an official statement shooting down rumors that one of its own detectives was arrested yesterday.
A video that circulated in social media showed a DPS officer in civilian attire getting arrested in San Antonio, but Fred Sato, the department’s spokesperson, told media partners yesterday that the video was taken while DPS K9 units were conducting an exercise and the officer was playing the role of a suspect.
“The Department of Public Safety, K-9 Unit, [was] conducting in-service training [yesterday], April 20. With this, we would like to inform the general public that no officer is being formally charged or arrested for any crimes. The video circulating on social media is that of a plainclothes detective playing the role of a suspect in the training,” he said.
During last year’s celebration of National Police Week, the CNMI Department of Public Safety unveiled its new K9 Unit facility. The facility is equipped with seven individual kennels for each K9, a shower room, a storage room, a conference room, and a secured backyard that is easily accessible through a small door behind each kennel.
The K9s currently serve as attack dogs as well as tracking dogs to further aid the CNMI’s police officers apprehend suspects.
Currently five dogs are stationed on Saipan while two are stationed on Tinian and Rota. (Kimberly B. Esmores)
