Ageless Nick Sablan tops May Ace
Nick Sablan won the Saipan Golfers Association May Ace of the Month Tournament last May 21 at the LaoLao Bay Golf & Resort west course.
The 71-year-old former CNMI national golfer humbled the field with a net 69 after shooting twin 38s for a gross of 76, which minus his 7 excellent handicap, gave him the score to beat in the tourney.
Ray Salas was a far second with his net 76 built around a gross score of 95 (45-50), while Mariano Fajardo completed the Top 3 with his net 77 after going 50-50 for a gross score of 100.
Sablan said he just enjoyed the greens and fairways in the May tournament and winning it all was gravy.
“It was just a fun day! You know there are times when you find that niche and everything’s going your way. Plus it was a perfect day for golf. Dedicating this to all my friends!” he said.
In the closest to the pin competition, Sablan ruled holes No. 3, No. 13, and No 17 to continue his ride on the gravy train, while Attorney General Edward Manibusan was without peer in hole No. 13.
Sablan continued his hot streak by winning both longest drives in holes No. 2 and 12.
Sablan now joins SGA’s 2023 Ace of Aces early qualifiers Ray Salas (January), Das Krishnan (February), Joe I. Sablan (March), and Rick Kautz (April).
