Just 4 Fun, Bat Boys to bash it out in softball finals
Just 4 Fun and Aimeliik Bat Boys clinched the finals spot after defeating their foes in the semis of the 2023 Budweiser Belau Amateur Softball Association Slow Pitch Open League at the Dandan Softball Field last Sunday.
Both teams are equally matched as they go head-to-head with just one loss throughout the season. It will be a matter of who wants the championship the most.
Just 4 Fun clinched the first finals spot after narrowly winning against No Excuse, 23-19. With a two-run home run by Just 4 Fun’s Shane Yamada, he gave them the extra leverage they needed as No Excuse had the final at-bat.
It was all or nothing for No Excuse in the last inning. Down by seven runs, they put their bat into motion and began to chip away at Just 4 Fun’s lead.
Audie Maratita started it off with a lead-off home run, then Marv Kaipat got on base in time for Verlance Secharmidal’s two-run home run. The game was now 18-23. J.D. Magofna scored one more run, 19-23.
With two outs, bases loaded, Henry Lizama stepped onto the plate. Trying to be the hero with a go-ahead grand slam, instead, he swung and missed for a strikeout and that was the ball game.
Kimo Angailen hit three homers for No Excuse, while Brandon Hocog and Jun Hocog hit two each. For Just 4 Fun, Yamada, Jay Kintol, and Nate Camacho blasted two home runs each.
The Bat Boys, on the other hand, blew Kebruka out of the field, 14-4.
Kebruka could not get home runs off of Bat Boys pitcher Sus Iguel and settled for ground ball and base hits. The problem with that was the Bat Boys launched multiple balls out of the field for an early 4-0 lead by the second inning.
Kebruka snagged a run by way of Mokes Iyekar, then Ben Leon Guerrero drove another run in the third inning with an additional home run by Chris Alepuyo, but they were down, 3-6 after a three-run homer by Bat Boys’ Irvin Saralu.
Kebruka managed to nip just one more run in the fifth inning, which the Bat Boys took as a green light to score more runs and take the win.
The Bat Boys scored seven runs in the last inning and secured the W.
After the semis, a home run derby was held, with Angailen taking first place. Second place went to Tony Salas and third place was Nate Camacho.
The best-of-three championship is set for Sunday, Oct. 28, at 10am, with the awards ceremony to follow.
