NYMWPS to host free webinar on PH energy security

The National Youth Movement for the West Philippine Sea will host a free Zoom webinar on energy security in the Philippines and its impact on the national security of the West Philippine Sea.

The webinar will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2024, from 10am to 11:30am Manila time; 12pm to 1:30pm Guam/Saipan time, and on Tuesday Jan. 30, 2024, 4pm to 5:30pm Hawaii time.

The Zoom webinar will be facilitated by the former undersecretary of the Philippines’ Department of Energy, Eduardo V. Mañalac.

Mañalac is an exploration geologist and petroleum company executive with more than 35 years of experience. He was appointed as president and CEO of the Philippine National Oil Company in August 2004 as well as the PNOC Exploration Corp. in September 2004. He was also subsequently chairman of the PNOC Energy Development Corp. around the same time that year.

Mañalac received his Bachelor of Science degree in Geology in 1967 from the University of the Philippines in Diliman. There, he also completed post-graduate studies in petroleum geology through 1969.

Within Mañalac’s career, he has succeeded in initiating new local exploration efforts, raising the national oil company’s competitive edge, ensuring the viability of local investment, renewing foreign interest in local oil exploration, and reestablishing PNOC and the country’s credibility in local and global oil industries.

Within the webinar, Mañalac will be joined by the U.S. Navy’s retired defense consultant and former director of operations of the U.S. Pacific Command’s Joint Intelligence Center, Capt. Carl O. Schuster. Schuster served for 25 years before he retired in Hawaii where he taught Diplomacy and Military Science at Hawaii Pacific University. Schuster is also a freelance writer with three books and over 700 articles published. He occasionally works for media outlets as a subject matter expert on defense issues related to naval operations and the Indo-Pacific Ocean region.
