Labor touts prospects for jobless

The Department of Labor reported yesterday that the CNMI “job bank” is filling up with new opportunities for employment this year, as jobs data collected from March to June lists 751 job vacancy announcements.

According to a Labor statement, only 10 percent of the total jobs posted have been hired, equivalent to 76 individuals. Thirty-five percent of these jobs were new positions, while 62 percent of posted jobs were for contract worker visa renewals.

Food preparation and serving, installation, maintenance and repair, and sales occupations are some of the larger number of vacancies posted, to name a few.

With the daily increase in job openings, Labor encourages the unemployed to register with the department, update their information online at www.marianaslabor.net, or visit them at their office on Capital Hill for further job assistance.

The department also checked on businesses to see if they are complying with labor regulations, with a total of 205 businesses visited since the beginning of this year. Data collected from these businesses show a total workforce of 4,532, about 53 percent of which are foreign national workers, 39 percent are status qualified citizens, and 9 percent are part-time workers.
