King-Hinds to run for delegate

Former Commonwealth Ports Authority board chair Kimberlyn King-Hinds has decided to run as the CNMI’s delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives in the Nov. 5, 2024, general election.

King-Hinds, who is a lawyer, confirmed with Saipan Tribune yesterday that she will be submitting her letter of intent to the CNMI Republican Party for its consideration as the party’s delegate candidate.

King-Hinds will make the formal announcement of her candidacy at the Marianas Business Plaza in Susupe this Thursday, Feb. 29, at 9:30am.

CNMI Republican Party president Diego Benavente announced yesterday that the deadline for anyone to submit their letter of intent to run as the Republican candidate for the office of the CNMI delegate is March 15, 2024. The letter must be submitted no later than 5pm and addressed to Benavente.

King-Hinds’ term on the CPA board, which started in 2015, ended in October 2023. As CPA board chair, she served, among other things, as the lead negotiator for the divert airfield lease agreement between the U.S. Department of Defense and the CNMI.

She served as chairperson of the Northern Marianas College Board of Regents from 2002 to 2006.

From 2014 to 2015, King-Hinds was the in-house counsel for the NMI Settlement Fund.

Last Feb. 6, Rep. Edwin K. Propst announced his intent to run as the CNMI’s delegate under the NMI Democratic Party banner.

Incumbent Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (D-MP) will not be seeking a ninth term.
