Q&A with CNMI’s Woman of Excellence in Fitness

MARY GRACE BAUTISTA

Founder and president, M2 Fitness

Q: What inspired you to do what you do?

A: I was inspired to become actively involved in my community by witnessing firsthand the power of collective action to create positive change and I’ve always been deeply inspired by the strength and resilience of individuals within my community.

Being part of numerous nonprofit organizations has allowed me to witness the resilience and strength of individuals facing adversity, and it’s this resilience that fuels my determination to keep pushing forward.

Every day, I’m motivated by the knowledge that even the smallest actions can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life, whether it’s advocating for women’s rights, promoting gender equality, or empowering people.

Q: Do you have an experience or achievement you’re proud of in your efforts to empower women and promote gender equality?

A: One of the most memorable experiences in my journey stems from the inception of M2 Fitness, a nonprofit organization that I proudly founded and serve as president.

Witnessing the transformational impact that M2 Fitness has had on the lives of countless women in our community fills me with immense pride and gratitude.

At M2 Fitness, our mission extends far beyond just exercise. We believe in empowering women to embrace their strength, both physically and mentally, in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Q: What would you consider the biggest challenges women face today?

A: Some of the most pressing challenges that women face today stem from deeply ingrained systemic inequalities and discriminatory practices like limited access to education and healthcare, gender-based violence, economic disparities, and underrepresentation in positions of leadership and decision-making. To overcome these, individuals and communities must come together in solidarity and collective action.

Education plays a pivotal role in challenging societal norms and empowering women to advocate for their rights. By investing in women’s education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities, we can break the cycle of poverty and empower women to fulfill their potential.

Q: Empowering women often involves challenging societal norms and stereotypes. Can you discuss a time when you had to confront such barriers, and how you overcame them?

A: One particular challenge I faced was when I decided to pursue a traditionally male-dominated professional field. I encountered skepticism and resistance from peers and even some mentors who questioned my capabilities. However, I persevered by focusing on my skills and determination, seeking out supportive networks, and proving myself through hard work and dedication. Over time, I was able to break through those barriers and pave the way for other women in the field.

Q: How can individuals, businesses, and governments create an environment where women can thrive?

A: That would require a multi-faceted approach that involves collaboration among individuals, businesses, and governments. Individuals can play a crucial role by actively supporting and advocating for gender equality in their workplaces and communities.

Businesses also have a responsibility to prioritize gender equality and create supportive policies and practices like implementing equal pay measures, offering flexible work arrangements, and providing leadership development opportunities for women.

Governments can start policies and regulations that promote gender equality and support women’s empowerment like implementing laws to address gender-based discrimination in the workplace, providing access to affordable childcare and parental leave, and investing in education and skills training programs for women.

Q: Will you share how mentorship has played a role in your own journey?

A: Mentorship has been instrumental in my journey, providing guidance, encouragement, and invaluable insights from experienced professionals. I’ve also had the privilege of mentoring other women, offering support, advice, and opportunities for growth.

One memorable experience occurred early on when I was navigating a career transition. I was fortunate to have a mentor who not only provided invaluable advice and insight but also served as a source of inspiration and encouragement during times of uncertainty. Their guidance helped me gain clarity about my goals, develop new skills, and build confidence in my abilities.

As I’ve progressed in my career, I’ve made it a priority to pay it forward and support other women in similar ways. Whether through formal mentorship programs or informal networking opportunities, I strive to create a supportive environment where women can connect, learn from each other, and thrive.

Q: How do you envision the future of gender equality and women’s empowerment, and what role do you see yourself playing in advancing these goals?

A: I see a world where every individual, regardless of gender, has the opportunity to reach their full potential and contribute meaningfully to society.

As for my role in advancing these goals, I see myself continuing to be a passionate advocate for gender equality and women’s empowerment. Through initiatives like M2 Fitness and other community engagement efforts, I will continue to create spaces where women can access resources, support, and mentorship to thrive in all aspects of their lives.

Q: On this International Women’s Day, what message or advice would you like to share with women and girls in the Marianas?

A: To each and every one of you, I want you to know that your dreams, your passions, and your voices matter. You have the power within you to create meaningful change and shape the future you envision for yourselves and your communities. To the women and girls of the Northern Mariana Islands, I say this: believe in yourselves, support one another, and never doubt the impact you can make. Your potential is limitless, and the world is waiting for your unique contributions. (Nhorleen Bitco-Lilles)
