Wild & Fresh opens in Garapan

A nurse supervisor at the Commonwealth Health Center has opened a fish stall in Garapan not only to help better provide for his family, but also to offer healthier food choices to the community.

“We opened Wild & Fresh because of the two reasons. First, as a nurse I noticed that the number of cancer and dialysis patients are increasing. This probably is correlated to the food we eat which is mostly frozen or with preservatives. Second, there are many people on the Island who like fish but do not know how to clean or having trouble in cleaning the fish. That is why we offer free cleaning and we even slice the fish,” said CHC nurse supervisor Jordan Danao.

He said he named his store Wild & Fresh because, “Basically most of our products are from the wild like fish and farm products. They’re caught from the wild and brought to the store and always remain fresh.”

Aside from pelagic fish and reef fish including lobster that are delivered fresh everyday by his fishermen friends, Danao’s Wild & Fresh also sells chicken and pork barbeque, lumpia, hot pandesal, grilled seafood, and fresh coconut for those with kidney problems.

As an added service, Danao said Wild & Fresh offers free blood pressure and blood sugar check whenever he’s off duty.

As for venturing into a new business when the economy is still not fully recovered, the 44-year-old native of Bicol in the Philippines said he has to make his own fortune and don’t want to wait for the government to turn the economy around.

“Saipan’s economy is driven by government leadership. We cannot just rely on them for the future of our family. Instead, we have to find ways how to help our family and contribute to the community,” he said.

Danao, who has two children, has made the CNMI home for the past 18 years. He is a graduate of Ago Medical Educational Center.

Wild & Fresh is located along Middle Road across the Mobil Oil gas station in Garapan. It is open from Monday to Saturday, 8am-7pm. For more information, call (670) 286-4444.
