Senate resolution introduced in honor of Julian S. Calvo

Sen. Paul A. Manglona (Ind-Rota) has introduced a Senate commemorative resolution in honor of the late Julian S. Calvo for his countless years of exemplary public service to the CNMI.

Following Calvo’s passing last May 14, Manglona introduced a Senate commemorative resolution to acknowledge and honor the distinguished life of the former Senate president and to recognize his honorable service to the CNMI and its people.

In a statement from incumbent Senate President Edith DeLeon Guerrero (D-Saipan), the CNMI lost a respectable public servant.

“I grew up seeing Mr. Calvo as a public servant during my Uncle Larry’s (DeLeon Guerrero) years as a public servant. We lost another respectable man that served our CNMI well. My utmost humble respect and deepest condolences to the family,” she said.

In a statement from House Speaker Edmund Villagomez (Ind-Saipan), he said Calvo served the CNMI—most especially his island of Rota—well and he deserves the recognition.

“I would like to extend my condolences and sympathy to the family of the late Julian S. Calvo. He has served the CNMI, most especially his beloved island of Rota, well before and after serving as a Senator in the Legislature. He deserves to be honored and recognized. May he rest in peace,” he said.

Saipan Tribune tried to get a comment from Gov. Arnold I. Palacios but he has yet to provide a statement.

According to the Senate commemorative resolution, Calvo was born on Aug. 8, 1939 on the pristine island of Rota to his parents Roberto Taitano Calvo and Calistra Songao Calvo who provided him with an upbringing that has brought him to be the caring and noble person that many will remember him as.

He was called to eternal rest on May 14, 2024.

Calvo shared a life indulged in warm memories with his spouse Lydia Mendiola Diaz Calvo and their children Eugenie and Jesse Mafnas; Evangeline and Francisco Muna; Juilan Jr.; Geraldine and Alejo Mendiola Jr.; Delbert and Erma Calvo; Lovey Ann and Olen Jacob; and their grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Calvo has contributed to the community for many years dating back to the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands when he worked as a teacher for the Trust Territory Government from 1962-1969; and an Economic Development Technician for the Trust Territory Government from 1972-1975.

Calvo had a longstanding and notable political career as a Senator, elected from the First Senatorial District in the Senate of the first through 15th Northern Marianas Commonwealth Legislature from 1977-1988.

Calvo was elected as the floor leader in the Third Northern Marianas Commonwealth Legislature before being elected as the Senate President in the Fifth Northern Marianas Commonwealth Legislature.

Calvo continued to serve the public selflessly when he worked as a Recovery Coordinator for the CNMI Government Disaster Control Office Rota Division from Jan. 13, 1988 to Jan. 23, 1988; a grant coordinating officer for the CNMI Government Individual and Family Grant Rota Division from Jan/ 24, 1988 to March 31, 1988; a deputy senior land commissioner for the CNMI government Rota Office of Land Commission from 1991-1993; an acting resident department head for the Rota Health Center in 1995; a health consultant for the Rota Mayor’s Office from 1995-1996; and a resident department head for the Public Health Services from 2006-2010.

Calvo, throughout his illustrious career path in the health field, held a vision with his wife to build a chapel at the Rota Health Center where individuals’ spiritual needs can be aided and would serve as a solemn place to focus on spiritual strength and encouragement. This chapel is now named the “Julian S. Calvo Divine Mercy Chapel” through Rota Local Law No. 22-13 to honor Calvo and all his just contributions to the people.
