‘Athletics team ready to compete at their best’
The 21 athletes of the NMI National Athletics Team are set and ready to compete at their best in the 2024 Micronesian Games in Majuro, Marshall Islands.
When asked about the team’s predicted medal haul, head coach and Northern Marianas Athletics development officer Elias Rangamar said that it’s challenging due to limited knowledge of their competitors.
He said, “The Micronesian region does not provide consistent annual competitions among the island nations, making it difficult to gauge the favorites. However, our athletes have trained diligently and are ready to compete at their best.”
The team was selected after they met a qualifying standard for their respective events and gender. “In addition, we considered potential upcoming athletes who show promise for future events and competitions. This approach ensures a blend of experienced and emerging talent on our team,” said Rangamar.
As for who to watch for, he said Tania Tan as she’s coming off a record-breaking performance in the 2023 Pacific Games. “Tania is expected to shine,” he said.
Along with Tan, Rangamar said Zarinae Sapong, Casey Cruz, and Theodore Rodgers are also notable track stars who all recently competed at the 2024 Oceania Championships earlier this month and are also poised for strong performances.
Rangamar said there are also a few more rising stars who are expected to make a name for themselves at the Games.
With Tan, Sapong, Cruz, and Rodgers are Alexander Camacho (sprints/hurdles), Christopher Cruz (sprints), Pony Tang (middle distance), Daniel Joab (throws), Jared Ayuyu (throws), Justin Camacho (sprints/hurdles), Takeru Jim (middle distance), Cody Shimuzu (sprints/jumps/hurdles), Simon Tang (sprints/jumps/hurdles), Bwilitomwar Rangamar (throws), Lyle Andrew (throws), Michael Miller (middle distance), Douglas Schmidt (jumps/throws), Maria Quitugua (sprints/throws), Kina Rangamar (sprints/throws), Cheraline Epity (throws), and Liamwar Rangamar (throws).
The biggest challenge? Coach Rangamar said the team is a very young team with minimal previous competition experience, therefore, “managing the pressures of first-time competition will be our biggest challenge. However, with the support of our NMA board, coaching staff, and the determination of our athletes, we are confident in their ability to rise to the occasion.”
“Stay tuned for more updates as we approach the Games, and join us in supporting our athletes as they represent the CNMI on this prestigious stage,” said Rangamar.
