JKPL holds completion ceremony for Children’s Summer Reading Program

Joeten-Kiyu Public Library concluded its Children’s Summer Reading Program with a completion ceremony and sponsor recognition event last June 28 at the state library’s premises in Susupe.

A total of 128 students completed the summer reading program that started on June 11 and ended on June 28. The event was attended by the students, volunteers, parents, and event sponsors.

Bookmobile supervisor Leora Sablan Terlaje, in her speech, mentioned how important reading is.

“Reading is not just a hobby. It is a superpower that opens doors to countless possibilities. It allows us to travel to different worlds, meet fascinating characters, and learn about the past, present, and future.”

She also thanked the JKPL team and its volunteers who have made the program possible.

According to Terlaje, the program was divided into two sessions. Session A was for students ages 6-8 years old and was held from 8:30am to 11:30am. Session B was for ages 9-12 years old and their afternoon schedule was from 12:30pm to 3:30pm.

There was a total of 16 volunteers who assisted in the program, wherein each volunteer had five to eight members. According to one of the volunteers, Margarette Claveria, 14 years old, when she saw the Bookmobile event at the Sugar King Park, she was asked if she will be interested to join as volunteer and she said yes.

“The most challenging is the afternoon schedule because they don’t usually talk and they don’t want to be assisted like they want to do it on their own, unlike the little ones in the morning.”

The certificate of completion and gift bag were distributed by House Speaker Edmund Villagomez (Ind-Saipan), Friends of the JKPL member Leslie Bradley, and Sen. Corina Magofna (Ind-Saipan).

From July to August, the Bookmobile along with the Technology Mobile Express will be visiting the most underserved villages on Saipan, offering a wide selection of books, programs, and activities for children of all ages to enjoy. Participants can register for the program, receive a reading log to track their progress. As they read books and complete activities, they will earn rewards and prizes to keep them motivated and engaged throughout the summer. A valid JKPL Library card is required. Registration is open until full. First registered, first served.
