NMC hosts Pacific Islander Cultural Night

In celebration of Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions Week, Northern Marianas College’s Project PROA is excited to announce the 2nd Annual Pacific Islander Cultural Night, taking place on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024, from 4pm to 7pm at the NMC Building V Parking Lot. This event is free and open to the public.

This year marks the 17th anniversary of the establishment of AANAPISI. In addition, the week of Sept. 23-27, highlights the critical role AANAPISI programs play in supporting the academic success of Asian American, Native American, and Pacific Islander students.

Pacific Islander Cultural Night will offer an immersive experience in the diverse cultures of the Pacific Islands, featuring traditional arts, performances, and local delicacies. Attendees will have the opportunity to:

Learn about Pacific Islanders: Engage in games and activities showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Marianas. Local organizations, such as the Talaya Club and Joeten-Kiyu Public Library, will be present to share traditional practices and literature by local authors. Information on AANAPISI’s impact on higher education will also be available.

Experience the arts of the Marianas: Special guest performers by local artists and cultural clubs such as Saipan Southern High School’s Nesian Cultural Club and Marianas High School Polksai Guma Chamorro Club will present traditional songs and dances. NMC students will demonstrate weaving and mwarmwar making, offering a hands-on look at Pacific Islander artistry.

Indulge in local favorites: Savor dishes prepared by popular local food establishments like Galaxy II Snack Bar, El Bishu, Oh My Grill, Cokonut Express, Magbers, Yaya’s Baked Goods, and Tupu Cane Juice. In addition, NMC’s student clubs and organizations, including the NMC Cooperative Research Extension, Education Services Nutrition and Health Program, Environmental Natural Resource Organization Club, Proa Club, Nursing Club, and Club of Artists will also offer a variety of food to enjoy.

Support local entrepreneurs: Cultural crafts from local vendors like Bonitu Basula, Chamolinian Chats, Tahines Creation, and Island Dry 670 will be available for purchase, providing a chance to support the CNMI’s artisans.

Join NMC in celebrating AANAPISI Week and the unique cultural heritage of Pacific Islanders.
