GRMC launches Cardiac Rehab Program

Guam Regional Medical City proudly announces the launch of its Cardiac Rehab Program, a specialized service aimed at helping patients recover from heart conditions like heart attacks, heart failure, or heart surgery. The program is designed with the people of Guam in mind, providing personalized support to guide them through their recovery journey and back to healthy, active lives.

Heart disease is one of the leading causes of illness and death, touching many families across the island. The Cardiac Rehab Program is GRMC’s response to this growing challenge, offering each patient the tools and guidance they need to regain strength and confidence after a heart event.

This isn’t just about recovery—it’s about giving patients the resources to stay “heart-healthy” long term. The program focuses on empowering patients to make healthy lifestyle choices that develop lasting habits for long-term wellness.

The program is delivered by a compassionate team of healthcare professionals, including physicians, pharmacists, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists, behavioral therapists, and dietitians. Together, they collaboratively create a plan that is unique to each patient.

“Our goal is simple: help patients recover and give them the confidence to live healthier, longer lives. We want them to know they’re not alone in this journey,” said GRMC interventional cardiologist, Dr. Maheswara “Mahesh” Satya Golla. “With personalized care, we focus on reducing future risks and making sure our patients feel empowered and supported every step of the way.”

GRMC’s Cardiac Rehab program consists of three essential phases:

PHASE 1: IN-HOSPITAL REHAB

In the first phase, patients engage in non-strenuous exercises, focusing on range of motion, guided by therapists and nurses. Patients will learn how to get their body moving, encouraging the heart to pump more, which helps improve circulation and reduce recovery time.

PHASE 2: OUTPATIENT REHAB

The second phase is assessment–focused on identifying limitations and restrictions in physical function. Patients will learn how to manage risk factors such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, and stress. Guidance on making heart-healthy nutrition choices is also implemented.

PHASE 3: POST-CARDIAC REHAB MAINTENANCE

The final phase involves more independence and self-monitoring. It centers on increasing flexibility, strength, and cardiovascular endurance. Patients are encouraged to continue regular physical activity and maintain healthy habits.

Golla adds that it’s more than just a treatment—it’s a lifestyle change that helps patients adopt healthy habits that last.

You may benefit if you have or have experienced a:

Heart attack

Heart condition, such as coronary artery disease (CAD); angina; or heart failure

Heart procedure or surgery

To extend this support to the community, GRMC offers heart health education through initiatives like the “Health Tips Series” on social media, the “Your Healthcare Partner” series on the Ray Gibson radio show, and the free “Walk with GRMC” event every Thursday morning from 9am to 10am at the Micronesia Mall Center Court. These efforts are aimed at encouraging Heart Strong–healthier living and raising awareness about how small changes can make a big difference in your health.
