MCS beats MHS; no undefeated teams left

The level of play this season is high and competitive as can be as there are currently no undefeated teams in the varsity standings after their games in the NMIVA-PSS Interscholastic Girls High School Volleyball League 2024-2025 at the Marianas High School Gymnasium last Tuesday.

After Mount Carmel School defeated Marianas High School, they handed MHS their first loss, which gave each varsity team (besides Tinian and Rota who have yet to play) at least one loss this season.

The Knights worked as one unit and brought down the mighty Lady Dolphins after three tough sets, 21-11, 12-21, 16-14.

MCS came out strong in the first set, showing precision and energy as they thrashed the Lady Dolphins with a 10-point advantage. But MHS wasn’t going down without a fight and responded in the second set—rallying powerful serves and solid defense. It was a turn of events as the Knights fell with a 9-point deficit.

In the winner-take-all tie-breaking third set, it was an intense battle through and through that went into extra points. Both teams traded points, neither willing to back down. It was a neck-and-neck fight, with the score tied at multiple points. Ultimately, the Knights managed to dig deep, making crucial plays to finally edge out the Lady Dolphins by just two points, 16-14.

MCS’ roster includes Jieun Kwon, Chelsy Reyes, Chealzka Navarro, Mia Yobei, Mia Abuan, Maili Peter, Hope McQuay, Sarah Melchor, Patricia Matsumoto, Aubrey Quitugua, Anjoelena Villagomez, and Aryanna Taimanao.

In other results that night, Kagman High School took down Saipan International School in twin sets, 21-18, 21-18; MHS II defeated sister team MHS III in three tough sets, 13-21, 21-19, 15-13; and Saipan Southern High School routed SIS II, 21-19, 21-14.

In the varsity standings as of last Tuesday, MHS and Agape Christian School lead with a 2-1 record; MCS and GCA are at 2-2 each; SIS and SSHS are at 1-2; and KHS have a 1-3 record.

There are just a few more games in the regular season, with the championship series set for Oct. 23-25.

Results of last night’s games will be posted in the next issues of Saipan Tribune.
