Adult school appeals for more aid
Even if it ran out of funding, the Adult School program of the Northern Marianas College is not giving up its current enrollment who are seeking their second chances to complete education.
Its officials are seeking possible funding from the business sector, which brought forth the program.
In a letter addressed to the presidents of Saipan Rotary Club and the Hotel Association of Northern Mariana Islands, the school is asking both groups to invest in the preparation of the local youth to fill into the job market.
Director Fe Calixterio said the program has 23 students and around 10 are expected to graduate in May. These students are ready to assume work or pursue post secondary education.
The program disregarded an earlier advise of NMC in suspending the last two modules scheduled last semester due to the absence of funding. Because of volunteer work, it went on to offer both courses.
“We cannot rely on volunteers to carry on the work over a long period of time. We need a reliable source of funding to carry out the work,” she said.
Last week, Rep. Rosiky Camacho provided the Adult School with its first financial assistance with his $2,500 check. It will help the program cover the cost of its second semester.
Founded in 1997, the Saipan Chamber of Commerce provided its seed money of $22,000 to start the program. It gives emphasis on life competency skills to students who missed to complete their high school.
