CRM offers GIS classes
The Coastal Resources Management Office is inviting government agencies to participate in the Geographic Information Systems classes that are being offered through the extended education program at the Northern Marianas College.
CRMO is in its second year of teaching beginning and intermediate level GIS classes for government employees using ArcView mapping software, according to Felipe Q. Atalig, CRMO Director.
The next class starts next month and each class is for 20 hours. Employees who will complete the class will earn one unit which can be used toward an AA degree, Atalig said.
Due to the limited availability of the college computer laboratory, the location and size of the classes will vary.
“CRMO will inform each agency of the location and class size at least two weeks prior to instruction. If the NMC computer lab is occupied during the desired dates, classes will be held in the conference room of CRMO or DEQ,” he explained.
The size of the class will determine how many students from each agency can attend and if the lab is occupied, computers will be supplied by each attending agency.
Atalig said CRMO plans to have two classes per year open to the public.
“The purpose of this is to give us the opportunity to share our technology with the public and to give us another platform for public education,” the newly-appointed director added.
“We will have guest speakers from the different sections within CRMO explain their day to day operation and responsibilities. This we hope will bridge the gap of understanding the necessity of our decisions,” he explained.
