LMA starts with 8 students
The Lina’la-Malawash Academy of the Public School System opened Monday with eight students from Hopwood Junior High School.
Although, its present facility up at Capitol Hill can accommodate over 20 students, the academy is still working with other referrals, according to acting associate commissioner for instruction Rita Sablan.
Marianas High School Principal Jim Denight expects to refer younger students to LMA. Currently, MHS has not yet identified students who can seek refuge with LMA.
Considered as a temporary relocation, students admitted are expected to spend at least one quarter with the academy. Under the new environment, counseling and not-so structured academic schedules are emphasized in bringing focus back to these students.
For its first year operation, the PSS is not yet ready to welcome students from private schools. With zero funding, PSS is using only two government houses for the academy.
But its objective to provide a second chance is also posing challenges to PSS. For instance, the Adult Basic Education of the Northern Marianas College hopes to arrest its growing number of younger students with the help of LMA.
