From walker to voice recognition system, Assistive Technology offers mobility and a sense of independence from people with special needs and the aging population.

During its recent open house at Joeten Kiyu Library, a group from the Man Amko came to check their blood pressure and tried some of the gadgets that were on display.

“They can be low tech or hi-tech. It can be a simple toothbrush with a handle,” said Celia B. Lamkin, M.D., Project Coordinator.

A voice recognition system was part of the display which functions to help individuals who are not able to use their hands in typing the regular keyboard.

As the person says the words, the system types them out in the computer.

For those who can’t see, a talking computer will allow the group to be on line with technology. They talk with the computer regarding their concerns and questions in trying to surf the technology world.

“We also have the augmentatively communication device for people who can’t talk,” she said.

While the close circuit television assists those who are visually impaired. It enlarges letters, figures and pictures to facilitate reading and comprehension.

A signature guide is also available to enable aging people to sign their checks and other documents with ease. The talking calculator prompt users what numbers they are punching in through the voice.

According to Thomas Camacho, executive director of the Governor’s Developmental Disabilities Council, prices of the device range from $2 to thousands of dollars. But federal programs can subsidize the purchase of these gadgets for individuals with special needs. While some can avail of this technology through Medicaid.

“Assistive technology is especially helpful for people with disabilities who require some sort of a device to function independently,” he said.
