Read the Covenant

Dear Editor:

We have legitimate differences with the Federal Government on Covenant issues such as immigration control, minimum wage, and the garment industry, but when it comes to the illegal Chinese on Tinian, my advice to our elected officials is for them to read the Covenant. The unfortunate situation on Tinian in my opinion (is) both a matter of national defense and foreign affairs. Therefore, this is solely the responsibility of the Federal Government, and we have nothing to say about it, not even to even express an opinion about it. The Federal Government has every right to do as it wishes in addressing the problem of the illegal Chinese, with or without our consent.

Governor Tenorio should take the opportunity to help out within the means of our limited budget, and I encourage him to do so without expecting that the CNMI government be reimbursed. For once, let us return the favor and provide assistance to the hardworking Federal agents that we have always expected and received from them

Froilan C. Tenorio
