A Marianas High School student has aired her protest over how her school is being treated against the “best” campuses in the CNMI.

Merced Ada says in a letter that “… many times MHS is treated like a third-class school.”

Her recent brush with this type of treatment happened during the preparations of the first Mock Trial Competition on Saipan.

Although, MHS was repeatedly mention as one of the schools to compete during the first showdown, it was a no show in the actual court race.

“Our students worked extremely hard to prepare for the Mock Trial Competition, but a day before the competition, the organizers asked the team to take the other side,” she said. The MHS team decided not to participate.

According to Ada, this unfair treatment defeated the whole purpose of the mock trial.

She also MHS students were put in similar situation in previous academic competitions.

“A lot is rather general. Does this figure include students who went on to receive their GED’s? Does this include the students who come to our schools because they were expelled from private schools,” she said.

This senior student said MHS has 1,600 students from various cultures and background. Just like other schools, MHS has its own woes to deal with.

“I believe that our biggest problem lies in convincing students and the community that the potential is there and that it must be put to use,” said Ada, who once participated in a summer school program at the Georgetown University.

“My school may not be top-notch in your eyes, but I refuse to give in to the notion that excellence is determined by how many winners you send to the AG’s Cup,” added Ada, a student representative to the CNMI Board of Education.
