2nd batch of EITC checks out
Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio yesterday said another batch of checks to pay out portion of the Earned Income Tax Credit has been released recently, bringing down to a little over $3 million the remaining obligation of the government to EITC recipients.
The amount disbursed represented the second 25 percent of the amount due to over 2,500 recipients of the long-delayed EITC covering tax year 1997. The first batch was released in April.
“We will try our best again. As soon as funds are available we will issue again the additional 25 percent,” the governor said in an interview.
The Department of Finance previously said it hoped to complete EITC payment by November.
Lack of funds has delayed its release and the administration has drawn up a payment plan to settle some $6.2 million in unpaid earned income credit, whose recipients are mostly from low-income families.
Tenorio also assured taxpayers that rebates will be released even before the government deadline once funds are available. “If money is available, we don’t have to wait for October…The finance department is working on it,” he said.
A total of $28.07 million in rebates and refunds have been paid out by the finance office for the previous tax year to more than 42,000 individual and corporate taxpayers.
Dance Festival
The Marianas Visitors Authority and the Commonwealth Council for Arts and Culture would like to announce that the 1st Annual Marianas Traditional Dance Festival will be presented on Saturday, June 12, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM at the Kilili Beach Park.
This event feature will feature nine performing groups representing dances from the Chamorro and Carolinian culture.
“The Marianas traditional Dance Festival is a component of the 1999 visit the Marianas Campaign,” said Perry John P. Tenorio, MVA managing director. “The Taste of the Marianas Food Festival that was held last month was also a major event with the ’99 Visit the Marianas calendar. These events were designed to attract the traveling public to the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas.”
The event is open to the public.
