It's an economic issue!
C’mon John. This isn’t a race issue. You do yourself, your paper and this important issue a disservice by resorting to such tactics. This is an economic issue, pure and simple. The only color involved here is red– for shame. Shame on the mainland Democratic Party for allowing itself to be coerced by the U.S. textile workers unions into doing their bidding. Trying to scuttle the honestly and openly bargained for rights of the CNMI to exercise a measure of local control over its economy, in a futile effort to preserve union textile jobs in the mainland, is a disgrace.
The Covenant is a solemn treaty between the U.S. and the CNMI. The unilateral amendment of the Covenant by the U.S. at the behest of labor organizations who find themselves in competition with a regime easily foreseen when the Covenant was negotiated, is unthinkable.
It would be the rankest sort of political payoff. One would suppose, after all we have read and heard in recent years about the U.S. government’s shameful repudiation of treaties with Native Americans, that the Democratic Party, of all organizations, would find such conduct abhorrent.
But money talks, and the mainland Democratic Party apparently listens. Shameful and disgraceful, yes; but don’t whip out the race card. Stick with the facts and the equities, and you will gain the support of people of integrity, regardless of color. Integrity, after all, is truly color blind.
