Basketball clinics for referees and coaches
From the basic skills clinics conducted by former NBA player Austin Carr during the Sports Challenge earlier this month, organizers announced yesterday that an Australian basketball official will arrive on Saipan in September to conduct clinics in refereeing and coaching.
Through the support of FIBA, the international body governing basketball, and the Oceania Basketball Confederation, Stuart Manwaring, basketball development officer from Australia, will come to CNMI to hold clinics from Sept. 30 to Oct. 30 on Saipan, Rota and Tinian
Stuart has been in the Northern Marianas in the past through the assistance of FIBA and the Oceania Basketball Confederation.
Those who are interested in refereeing locally or in the region should be accredited, and this can be done when Stuart is here. He will also conduct a Level 1 course in coaching.
At a recent meeting of NMASA, it was discussed that all future coaches in all sports must receive certification prior to coaching any national team, and next month’s event provides an opportunity for those who wish to receive that certification in basketball.
The tentative schedule for the clinics on Saipan are: Level 1 coaching, first week of October, and refereeing, second week of that month. Sessions will be held in the evening and on weekends.
Clinics will be conducted on Tinian on Oct. 18 to 22 and on Rota on Oct. 25 to 28, 1999.
All persons interested in the referees clinic, coaching course or the Youth Basketball Camp must stop by the Gilbert C. Ada gym to fill out an application. Deadline is on September 25, 1999.
