The Northern Marianas Council for the Humanities has began the second phase of the forum series for history teachers in the CNMI.

The first forum was held last July 14 and the succeeding sessions followed four Saturdays from then, according to the council’s press release.

The first series consisted of four consecutive sessions that discuss the pre-history of the Marianas. A special resource person, Dr. Koji Lum, a specialist in genetics, provided the participants with new information on the origins of the people of the Marianas.

Other resource people came from the local Historic Preservation Office and the Micronesian Area Research Center at the University of Guam.

The coming session will include exploration of the Spanish period from 1668 to 1898, the German administration from 1898 to 1914, the Japanese civilian period from 1920 to 1941, the war in the Pacific 1941 to 1944, and the Naval administration of the Marianas including the early trusteeship period from 1944 to 1962.

A special guest for the Spanish period session will be Filipino scholar Augusto de Viana, chief of Research and Publications Division, National Historical Institute, Manila.

De Viana has specialized in Philippine history and will be addressing the joint experiences of the Marianas and the Philippines during the Spanish period.

The forum series will conclude in October with further four Saturdays covering the Trusteeship period and the path to the Commonwealth, the council said.

College credit and certification from the Public School System will be given to teachers who complete the full cycle.
