The Public School System has started receiving applications for the 1999 Christa McAuliffe Fellowship for eligible teachers and principals.

Education Commissioner Rita Inos announced that the grant has been expanded to allow 10 fellowships instead of just one.

Deadline for submission of application is Sept. 27, Inos said in a memo to teachers and principals.

An applicant may request a fellow grant of maximum of $2,500.

Eight years of experience as a class room teacher is among the eligibility requirements for an applicant.

Grant recipients, according to Inos, also have to agree to a condition for them to return to teaching position for at least two years following the completion of the award.

“Repayment of the award shall be made to the state in case of fraud or gross noncompliance by any recipient,” Inos said.

The fellowship priorities involve areas on research on school improvement plans through local content and performance standard development, and assessment design; learning technologies for classroom use, development of innovative programs; as well as projects that involve community and school partnerships.

“The fellowships should be for professional development expenses with little or no equipment or materials being purchased,” Inos said. (MCM)
