Republican Party unveils Saipan slate • Ex-congressmen make a comeback
Eleven Republican members of the House of Representatives who are occupying Saipan seats are seeking reelection in the Nov. 6 political exercise.
The Republican Party yesterday filed at the Board of Elections the nominating petitions for the party’s candidates for Saipan.
Two former congressmen, Ben Fitial and Stanley Torres, are hoping to make a comeback in the political landscape.
Fitial and Torres are running for election in District 3, along with incumbent Reps. Heinz Hofschneider, Jesus T. Attao, Melvin Faisao, and former Education Commissioner William S. Torres.
Fitial is a former House speaker. He was the chairman of the Republican Party until he resigned early this year to throw his hat into the ring.
Stanley Torres was an old Republican who left the party several years ago because of his differences with some party members. He rejoined the party after he lost his bid to get a senatorial seat as an independent candidate during the 1997 elections.
Board of Education member Tom Pangelinan has joined the Republican Party to seek a seat in District 4. He is running with incumbent Rep. Francisco Cepeda.
The Republican candidates for District 2 are Speaker Diego Benavente and Rep, Oscar Babauta.
The lineup for District 1 is composed of Reps. David M. Apatang, Manuel A. Tenorio, Karl T Reyes, Herman T. Palacios, Majority Floor Leader Ana S. Teregeyo, and Martin B. Ada.
For the Saipan senatorial seat, the Republican Party has nominated incumbent Sen. Juan P. Tenorio, who will be squaring off with the Reform Party’s bet, Ramon S. Guerrero.
The Democratic Party did not field a candidate for Saipan seat, and no independent candidate has surfaced as a third contender for that position.
Deadline for filing of nominating petitions is Sept. 22.
The elections board has so far certified 14 candidates. (MCM)
