Tinian told to prepare for special polls
The Board of Elections has already informed the Democratic and Republican Parties on the island-municipality of Tinian to prepare their candidates for the coming special election after Sen. Herman Manglona resigned from his position.
BOE Executive Director Gregorio C. Sablan said he encouraged the party representatives — Gary Aldan for the Democratic Party and Elias Borja for the Republican Party –– to begin their selection process as the special election will begin after the Nov. 6 midterm polls.
The election on Tinian will be conducted by BOE Board Member William Cing and supervised only by the election board officials on Saipan. There are an estimated 1,000 voters on Tinian.
“We want them to start the selection process right now because we don’t want to wait for the last minute,” said Sablan. He said the special election on Tinian would need a budget of $3,000 .
BOE is still waiting for the Senate to declare a vacancy in the position left by Manglona who is facing possible corruption charges after quitting last week.
Federal authorities are investigating Manglona for allegedly taking bribe money from local businessmen during his term as mayor of Tinian. Two businessmen earlier pled guilty to bribing the senator in exchange for contracts for CIP projects, while his ex-aide admitted that he attempted to intimidate a juror into voting against the indictment of his former employer.
