At least 550 temporary jobs will be available to the local community as soon as the government starts conducting census on the population of the CNMI, the Governor’s Office said yesterday.

The Governor’s Office also said the census project would provide a “major boost to the economy.”

Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio signed on Monday a memorandum of agreement between the CNMI Central Statistics Division of the Department of Commerce and the Bureau of Statistics of the U.S. Department of Commerce, officially starting the Census 2000 in the CNMI.

The agreement calls for close to $3.5 million in U.S. federal budget, and the project is expected to be finished by fall of 2000.

According to a press release from the Governor’s Office, a total of 550 temporary positions will be created by this project including enumerators, crew leaders, data entry clerks, supervisors and managers who will canvass the entire CNMI population for the last census of this millennium.

Tenorio urged all the CNMI residents and government offices to cooperate with the Census 2000 enumerators and officials.

He said the information to be obtained from the Census 2000 will be used by the administration in planning for educational and heath facilities as well as infrastructure planning for roads, telephones and water.

The governor also indicated that accurate census is vital to large international businesses in locating supermarkets, shopping malls and other developments.

The information can also be used in providing federal grants to victims of natural disasters such as typhoons or earthquakes.

The Census 2000 will be conducted on all the inhabited islands in the CNMI distributed over 800 geographic blocks.

The headquarters of Census 2O00 will be located in Department of Commerce Building on Capitol Hill.
