As October is Arbor Month, the Clean-up Brigade will take a break from picking up garbage from the ground in order to plant something valuable instead.

The Division of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is constructing a wetland in American Memorial Park, and the project will get a big boost from the Brigade this Saturday morning.

Members will meet at the park to plant trees within the wetland. “Other parts of the community, such as Marianas High School and the Hyatt Hotel, have helped out with the tree planting,” says Brigade organizer Clarissa Tanaka. “We think it’s the type of event the Clean-up Brigade should take part in.”

The DEQ-sponsored Brigade meets this Saturday, October 2 at 8:00 am at American Memorial Park in Garapan. Members are asked to wear clothing and footwear that they don’t mind getting dirty or wet. They should also bring a small shovel or trowel for digging. The planting will last until about 10:00 am after which the group will break for beverages.

T-shirts are given to Clean-up Brigade members who participate in at least three events. Specially designed baseball caps are given to the Brigade’s Gold members – those who have participated in at least 10 events.

If you have any questions about volunteering for the Clean-up Brigade, call DEQ at 664-8500 or 664-8501.
