Democrats launch campaign

The Democratic candidates for the Nov. 6 elections launched their campaign Saturday night, expressing hopes of taking over the Republican-dominated Legislature.
About 300 supporters joined the party’s kickoff rally held at the Koblerville Basketball Court, where official candidates were introduced. At least three of them, Reps. Dino Jones (Precinct IV), Maximo Olopai (Precinct III) and Rosiky Camacho (Precinct I), are incumbents.
Democratic head Carlos Camacho said the party’s platform, which will be made public this week, focuses on economy and the CNMI-US relations.
“It’s a 10-page long platform which discusses various issues ranging from education to CNMI-US relations,” Carlos Camacho said.
“Right now, we’re satisfied with the 10 candidates that we have for the House of Representatives and we will push for their successful election,” Carlos Camacho said.
Other candidates are Antonio Muna Camacho, Frank Deleon Demapan, Brigida Deleon Guerrero Ichihara, Florencio Tenorio Guerrero, and Juan Cepeda Tudela for Precinct I. Luis Salas Camacho and Sid Atalig Sablan for Precinct III.
In deciding not to field candidates for other available slots, Camacho said “we are more concerned about quality rather than quantity.”
He said the Democratic Party’s candidates for the House of Representatives were chosen by the people on the precinct level and not by the party.
“We did not try to fill in slots; we tried to select the best candidates. The ones selected at the precinct level are the ones that the people want,” Carlos Camacho said.
