3D AWARENESS DRIVE A night of fun without alcohol By LUCY ROSARIO
More than 200 students came to dance at the GIG Disco in Garapan Wednesday night, an activity envisioned to raise awareness about the hazards of drunk and drugged driving.
For a $10 a ticket, each student was treated to free non-alcoholic beverages, food and a night of dancing and contests. They also had raffle prizes and gifts for high school students ages 13 to 19.
Students from the elementary schools had a banner contest and the three winners were Dan Dan elementary School, 1st place; GTC Elementary School, 2nd place; and a tie between Oleai Elementary School and Rota Elementary School, 3rd place.
Charles Cepeda of Pacific Trading, one of the major sponsors of the event, said, “It’s really great, we have always been behind this kind of things especially in regards to the teens, my hats off to the 3D Program for making this event. It was well organized and I hope that parents support this kind of activity in the future.”
Student Monica Santos said, “It’s a great experience to see what adults do without alcohol.” She went to the dance after a cousin, who works for Power 99 told her about the event.
According to John Sokau, chair of the 3D Committee, this is the first time that a dance was held in the five years since the program started.” “It is a way for us to educate the teens that they can have fun without the alcohol. Teens like hanging around the bars but the thing is, we don’t have one for them.”
Rose Ada, PIO for DPS and a member of the 3D Committee, said that doing this for the teens silence them and makes them think twice about drinking alcohol. “We hope that the we’re able to send this message to the teens,” she said.
Others who helped organized the event were the Safe and Sober Committee headed by Frank Camacho of DPS, DARE Program head Capt. John Salas, Division of Mental Health, Pacific Trading, Power 99, Bobby Cadillac’s and GIG, among others Also present in the event was Ms. CNMI Universe 1999 Cheryl Cabrera and Moses Saburo.
