Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio is mum on the move by the Senate to force acting Attorney General Maya B. Kara out of office, but he may have another plan in the offing to give in to pressures by lawmakers.

He disclosed that he will meet with members of his Cabinet soon to discuss ways on how to work closely with members of the Legislature and the business community as he pledged at the inaugural session Monday.

“We have to find a way to continue to exchange communications that need to be done in order for us to improve the [laws] we have now,” Mr. Tenorio told reporters in an interview yesterday.

“Whether that needs to be repealed or to amend or to improve to bring more economic development, by all means we are happy to do that,” added the chief executive. “We always like to see new investors coming in.”

During their organizational session, at least three senators called for closer cooperation between the executive and legislative branches to pull out the economy from the two-year doldrums as they vowed to push elimination of laws unfavorable to the investment climate on the island.

Sen. Ramon S. Guerrero at the same time pledged to put pressure to the governor to replace Ms. Kara who has held her AG post in acting capacity since her appointment in July 1998.

Mr. Tenorio withdrew her nomination at the last minute in the wake of clear Senate rejection in September that year and has since appointed her in acting capacity every 30 days as provided under the law.

Asked if he would submit a new name as a chief government lawyer soon, the governor declined to comment.

Ms. Kara has come under close scrutiny in the Senate in the past months following her controversial position on issues such as the settlement forged by AG with the Japan-based advertising firm I & S Corp. over the tourism promotion undertaken by the defunct MVB.
