Millennium canoe voyage stirs excitement
Excitement sets in as the Millennium traditional canoe voyage nears its anticipated date of departure. excitement with the local crew members getting more eager to have it started than ever.
Executive Assistant for Carolinian Affairs Office Frank M. Rabauliman has been communicating with the Governors of Yap and Chuuk about the voyage.
The list of crew members from Saipan had been forwarded to the respective governors of the two islands in preparation for the charter ships to Polowat and Satawal.
Ten local crew members had departed Saipan to Satawal via Yap, early morning of March 19. The group rode on the field trip vessel, Microspirit and landed on Satawal last March 23. The other six crew members of this voyage which will depart on the 31st for Chuuk, will charter a boat to transport them to Polowat.
The traditional sailing canoes from Satawal and Polowat are set to leave in early April for Saipan with a total of 15 voyagers on board the five traditional canoes.
After a rendezvous on Pikelot, the voyage will continue to Saipan and is expected to arrive on or around April 15.
The Carolinian Affairs, Incorporated is extending its appreciation to individuals whose contribution have made the voyage possible: Speaker Benigno R. Fitial, Representatives Diego T. Benavente, Stanley T. Torres, Martin Ada, Rosiky F. Camacho, Norman Palacios, Malua T. Peter and Brigida DLG Ichihara; Senate President Paul A. Manglona, and Senate Vice President Tom (Kiyu) P. Villagomez.
The group also mentioned the contribution of Saipan Mayor Jose C. Sablan and Northern Islands Mayor Joseph T. Ogumoro, as well as of the Commonwealth Council for Arts & Culture.
The Carolinian Affairs, Inc. is encouraging other community members to come and support the voyage planning activities. Meetings are held every Thursday at the CAO Utt in Garapan at 7:00 p.m.
