As of 10:00 a.m. Monday, the six traditional sailing canoes from Satawal and Polowat had departed Pikelot and are expected to arrive Saipan on Friday evening or Saturday morning.

For the first time in modern history, a traditional expedition of this size will land at the Tanapag beach front. The seráágh or voyage is also noteworthy in that it will be the first such voyage that will include the largest entourage of our local citizens, 18 men and a woman.

It also exemplifies the “changing of the guard” as Sesario Sewralur, son of master navigator Mau Piailug will navigate his first open sea voyage from Satawal to Saipan. A notable mention goes out to another young navigator, Teo Onopei from Polowat, who will lead the canoes from Polowat.
