Samoa village honors slain lawmaker

PAGO PAGO, American Samoa—The 300 member group from the village of Sagone paid tribute to assassinated Minister of Works, Luagalau Levaula Kamu, during their traditional performance celebrating the territory’s centennial.

Luagalau, who represented the district that included the village of Sagone, was killed during a political function last July.

Two former cabinet ministers who plotted the killing have been found guilty of murder and were sentenced to death by hanging. The assassin is currently serving a life sentence.

Fiji nurses strike gets support

SUVA, Fiji Islands—The Fiji Trades Union Congress has pledged full support for a nurses’ nationwide strike on May 16.

The Congress said it will back the nurses’ strike, even if means breaking the law on industrial action in providing necessary medical services.

The nurses have served notice they will go on strike to enforce a promised pay raise, which they said the government has failed to deliver.

The nurses are demanding a $1,000 to $2,000 across-the-board pay hike, which the government pledged to deliver by March 31 this year. (Pacific Islands Report)
