The fast-growing CNMI community which currently has over 800 three to five year olds eligible for the headstart program, should consider creating a center where the Headstart Policy Council can meet to discuss issues concerning the pre-schoolers.

HPC members aired this concern to Governor Pedro P. Tenorio Friday during the proclamation signing for the Headsart Month which kicks off today.

HPC Vice Chair James L. Hemley said the center is needed for council members to get together and disseminate information to villages concerning CNMI’s future leaders.

At present, the council usually meets at the Manamko center or other accessible areas.
Gov. Tenorio has underscored the need for parent involvement in the education of pre-schoolers, noting that parents are the best teachers any child could ever have.

Lt. Governor Jesus R. Sablan said creating a center for headstart council members is a good idea. He added that he and the governor would be willing to hear out more needs the headstart program may have.

May has been proclaimed Headstart Program Month which focuses on the educational, social, medical, dental, nutritional and mental health well being of children.
The program targets to help children with certain needs and those from low-income families.

The overall goal of the headstart program is to enhance each child’s effectiveness in dealing with both the present environment and later responsibilities in education and social life.
