The Commonwealth Utilities Corporation will be installing a new electrical system this Saturday that will provide fast service repairs during emergency power outages. Crews will install special switches that isolate streets and villages at the scene of the problem, resulting in a wide range. of electrical services for the majority of customers. In order to tie in the electrical switch to the exiting system, linemen will touch high voltage lines, and this will force the utility to have a power outage.

During the emergency, the customers who don’t have a problem in front of their houses will still have the power during emergencies just as soon as the isolation switches are installed,” explained CUC Executive Director Timothy P. Villagomez.

The utility community is improving the entire area with help from the US Federal Capital Improvement Funds and local lawmakers. The project began a year ago costing over $2 million. When complete, this project will benefit not only the Chalan Kanoa area, also neighboring villages. Therefore, residents should expect a series of additional power outages before the construction project is finished.

This Saturday, utility linemen will install the isolation switches and conduct maintenance on the power poles. Because the linemen will touch high voltage wires, the power will be turned off from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The following customers and areas will not have power this Saturday, May 6, 2000: Joeten Kiyu Public Library, Nauru Building, Grace International Inc., Onwel Manufacturing Saipan Ltd., Supreme Court, Island Farmers’ Market,

Dept. of Public Safety, Micronesian Telecommunications (MTC), and the areas surrounding these Chalan Kanoa businesses.
