Fishing enthusiasts from all over the region will gather in the Republic of Marshall Islands capital of Majuro on September 1-4, 2000 to compete in the biggest fishing event of the year.

Organizers of the 8th Annual Mobil All Micronesia Fishing Tournament are expecting to draw participants from the CNMI, Guam, Chuuk, Yap, Palau, Pohnpei, Kosrae, Kiribati, Nauru, Ebeye and Tuvalu for the first regional fishing derby in the new millennium.

Mobil Oil Micronesia sponsors the fishing tournament, which will be coordinated and hosted by the Marshalls Billfish Club. Cash prizes of $5,500 will be awarded to the off-island team that catches the biggest fish in each of the trolling categories.

Organizers limit the number of teams that may participate to the fishing tournament from each of the island-state to two with at least two to three members.

Record holders for the previous fishing derbies are Team Taga which caught the biggest Billfish at 420 pounds; Marshalls Billfish Club for the biggest Tuna at 95 pounds; Betio Game Fish Club for the biggest Wahoo at 36 pounds; Team Palau for the heaviest Barracuda at 23 pounds; and Kosrae Batur Club for the heaviest Mahimahi at 33 pounds.

Teams Palau and Saipan have each won previous Mobil All Micronesia Fishing Tournaments.

Sponsors are urging interested participants to register before the May 31, 2000 deadline. Registration forms may be sent by mail with the $600 entry fee to the Marshalls Billfish Club at P.O. Box 1139, Majuro MH 96960.

The $600 entry fee for each team covers individual angler registration, official shirt, two-day boat charter, and admission to all tournament activities, including the awards banquet and presentation of trophies.
