Kids reach out to the environment
Students played a part in looking out for the environment yesterday by bringing to school trash materials which they converted into reusable items.
Recycling, as second grade students of Garapan Elementary School know it, is taking waste and salvaging it for further use.
“We do this to help the environment,” said eight-year-old Marife during her school’s “Recycling Carnival” yesterday.
“We turn these into something we can use again,” said fellow second grader Diana, referring to empty aluminum cans, scratch paper, and drinking straws which were used as decoration and play items for the carnival.
The recycling carnival is an annual event slated by GES as a way of educating students the value of conservation.
For two days in the month of April each year, GES asks students to bring to school recyclable materials. The collected items are gathered in trash bags to be sold to local recycling companies, which would earn the students a small amount of money.
The yearly carnival is held for the students as a reward for their efforts in bringing in items which in the long run can benefit the environment. (MM)
