Local farmers over the weekend had the chance to show off their best produce during the 21st Annual Agricultural Fair, drawing hundreds of curious onlookers at the Civic Center in Susupe.

The event also coincided with the grand opening of the weekly Sabalu Farmers Market.
Chairman for the Plant Division and acting Division of Agriculture Director Stan Villagomez lauded the 19 farmers who registered for the fair, adding to the activity’s success.

Mr. Villagomez said the fine weather also contributed to the event’s positive turn-out.
Aside from the usual fruits and vegetables, farmers also brought in mints, spices, and eggplants for display.

“These items are very new this year but they are not competing although we try to add other vegetables into the competition,” said Mr. Villagomez.

For the competition, the organizing committee has maintained the contest categories which include the search for the best fruits, vegetables, root crops, and miscellaneous crops.

The fair also exhibited live cows, pigs, goats, and poultry confined in cages.
Despite public insistence, products on display were strictly for viewing although they were later sold for reduced prices after being judged for the competition.

The annual activity is being slated to recognize hardworking farmers on island who endure back-breaking labor throughout the year to provide Saipan with the freshest produce.

“I think farming is the oldest profession and out here in the CNMI. Even my grandfather, he grew up as a farmer and he died as a farmer.

“This is something that should continue because its healthy for people, they produce good fruits and vegetables which are very nutritious for us,” said Mr. Villagomez.

Meanwhile, winners for the best produce competition will win as much as $2,500 to be awarded during a banquet planned by the organizing fair committee.
