101 summer jobs for students still available

The Job Training Partnership Act is still seeking over a hundred participants for its Summer Youth Employment and Training Program to complete the 300 slots available for Saipan-based students.

The Job Training Partnership Act is still seeking over a hundred participants for its Summer Youth Employment and Training Program to complete the 300 slots available for Saipan-based students,

But JTPA Executive Director Felix Nogis has expressed optimism that the remaining slots will be filled in time for the June 20th deadline.

High school students who will not be officially off from school until next week will be given three days after schools close to submit their job applications at the JTPA office in Capitol Hill.

“Hopefully, they will come in even at the last minute,” said Mr. Nogis.

The JTPA staff is anticipating another busy day yet on June 20, the last day for filing of applications, noting that students have always made it a habit every year to wait until the deadline to submit their forms.

Prior to the start of the training program on June 26, an orientation will be held for all participants on June 23 at the Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe.

The orientation will be divided into two sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon to cover all 300 students.

Student participants will each be paid $3.50 an hour for six straight weeks ending August 4.

During the course of the training, students will be assessed on their performance by both company owners and JTPA.

JTPA case managers will conduct rounds every other day to keep track of the students’ progress while on the job. Certificates of completion for having participated in the program will be provided for the trainees at the end of the summer.

Last year, the agency recorded that over 94 percent of students who participated in the program stuck with their jobs until the end.

Out of 300 available slots for CNMI residents, 299 slots were occupied by students from both the low and high income brackets in the previous year. Rota and Tinian had 106 student trainees during last year’s summer youth and employment training program. (MM)
