NMC establishes new department

A liberal education is what helps people make sense of the often-confusing and increasingly complex world around us, and liberal education is what NMC's Social Sciences, Fine Arts, and Humanities Department is all about.

A liberal education is what helps people make sense of the often-confusing and increasingly complex world around us, and liberal education is what NMC’s Social Sciences, Fine Arts, and Humanities Department is all about.

This department is a diverse academic unit housing a wide variety of liberal arts disciplines which make up the bulk of student General Education curricula requirements. Three of the five core course requirements for all degree and certificate programs are offered through the department.

In addition, the department houses the Criminal Justice degree and certificate programs offered at NMC, and serves as the academic unit administering lower-division interdisciplinary programs offered through Student Services. The department also coordinates with the Workforce Development Program in its efforts to provide continuing and professional education in the area of Law Enforcement Administration and in the support of extended degree programs offered by other institutions of higher education.

The department offers a full range of post-secondary level courses in Visual and Fine Arts (Ceramics, Drawing, Painting, Drama and Music), Literature, including Literature of the Pacific, Communications, Philosophy, and Social Sciences (History, Sociology, Psychology, Geography, Political Science, Personal Law and Criminal Justice).

The departmental faculty members have taught at post-secondary institutions in the U.S. mainland, Europe, and throughout the Pacific region, bringing to NMC a wealth of experience and expertise in their respective fields, enhancing the educational experience available here in the CNMI. It is the college’s goal to provide the best possible liberal arts education to the people of the Northern Marianas, and to engage in community service at every available opportunity.
