To mark a month-long Arbor Month celebration in October, the Department of Lands and Natural Resources will be giving away $6,000 worth of plant vouchers in efforts to encourage the public to plant trees.

The department will be issuing 300 vouchers worth $20 each, limited to one per household to ensure that more families benefit from the once in a year offer.

“This means that every household now has more chances to avail of the vouchers,” said Marianne C. Teregeyo, DLNR special assistant for correspondence.

The Division of Agriculture in previous years only made available 150 vouchers that entitled each recipient family to purchase $40 worth of plants.

Availed on a first-come-first-serve basis starting Oct. 1, interested parties can acquire and redeem their vouchers at the division’s two nurseries located in Kagman and other participating private nurseries.

“What we encourage is that each family take home as much plants as they can. This is an opportunity for them to save a relatively huge amount on fruit trees. Like the governor, we also encourage residents to choose fruit trees because it bears fruits that families can consume,” said Ms. Teregeyo.

“We are encouraging everybody to plant trees not just during Arbor Month, but every month all year round,” she added.

Tree planting activities will be slated all throughout next month with a kick-off ceremony scheduled on Oct. 1 at the new Kagman Elementary School.

The first tree among hundreds of trees to be planted will be done by Governor Pedro P. Tenorio. Similar activities will follow around CNMI schools.

Arbor Day is celebrated annually in the United States and throughout the world, an annual tradition which the Commonwealth adopted in 1989.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Trees, our bridge to a brighter future.”
