Masters Basketball League GTE eliminates Doritos
GTE Pacifica defeated team Doritos in the elimination round of the Masters Basketball League Thursday at the NMC Gym with the score of 93-71.
GTE, bouncing back from their last game defeat in the hands of Badtz Maru, did not waste time as they jump to a 15-point lead in the early minutes of the game.
Richard “Doc” Brostrom led GTE with 18 points, 3 assists, 1 blocked shot, 15 rebounds, and 4 steals, while playing coach Tony Sablan coming back from his off-island trip made sure that his team would win as he contributed 15 points, 5 assists, and a steal.
Team Doritos however made a run and tried to get close with GTE but the height, speed, and age advantage of GTE Pacifica was just too much for team Doritos. Team Doritos missed the services of their shooting forward Roger Valencia whose average is 18 points per game and playing Coach Andy Nepail, who were both sidelined by injuries.
Romy Grimpula led team Doritos with 18 points, 3 assists, and 6 rebounds. Orly Catayong, the “Speedy Gonzales” point guard of team Doritos had 12 points, 5 assists, 6 rebounds, and 6 steals in a losing cause.
Meanwhile, Old Aces eliminated Lens Bar with a 72-68 decision in the second game of the night at the NMC Gym. Old Aces made sure that they will try to make it to the next round of the playoff.
Tony “Gomez” Luzama was on fire as he was hitting the 3-point shots. Luzama pumped in 31 points and grabbed 2 rebounds, while Jack Diaz helped out Luzama with 11 points, 1 assist, 13 rebounds, and 2 steals.
Lens Bar was led by Mark Rozic with 22 points, 7 rebounds, and a steal, while George Poquiz and Sean Frink scored 16 points a piece to back up Rozic. Frink had 1 assist, 1 blocked shot, 11 rebounds, and 3 steals.
It was a close game from the beginning and it was not decided until the dying seconds of the game. With less than a minute to go Old Aces and Lens Bar were trading baskets. The score was tied 68-all with 25 seconds remaining, however on the next play Tony Rogolofoi was fouled and was sent to the charity lane and converted the crucial shots of the game. Rogolofoi although scoring only 8 points was the hero of this game since the 4 last points of Rogolofoi was the winning points.
